Goleta Files Criminal Charges Against Local Couple

The Goleta Valley Voice has an article posted in regards to local couple Anthony and Joann Gomez and the criminal charges the City of Goleta has filed against them for their unpermitted second garage.

Apparently the Design Review Board (DRB) was involved when the couple had put through a proposal two years ago to construct a second story addition. The DRB wanted the garage torn down in order for the couple to be permitted for the addition.

In reading through the article, someone dropped the ball somewhere along the way, and the next time the couple heard from the City, it was not a love letter, but instead criminal charges.

In all fairness, the article states that City legal counsel was not available for comment on this at press time, so hopefully there will be more information forthcoming about what went awry in this circumstance.

Add one more case to the legal load at the City and more funds to be sent to Riverside.

There are two sides to this issue. Best get the other one before you make up your mind.

Mayor Blois did ask at the last council meeting for more information as to why the couple had criminal charges filed against them, so obviously we'll have to wait and see what the City has to say.

It's obviously one-sided right now, as the City legal counsel was not available to comment on it at the time the GVV went to press.

While you are on the topic of the Goleta Design Review Board, you might want to note that the new "Absolute Private Property Rights" Council is in the process of dismantling the rules guiding design review. They have held 2 stealth public meetings during an afternoon session and are holding another today. See http://tinyurl.com/2x9zml

Of course there are no cameras and only a few people can attend in mid-day to comment on or oppose this effort.

The new council people all campaigned on the theme of openness, and this is what we get.

When the new council finishes this DRB "Reform", anyone will be free to pretty much design anything in our neighborhoods, no matter how ugly or out of character, as long as it meets the building code.

What about the property rights of those who already live in the neighborhood? Gone.

It would help if you would expose this skullduggery.
